This group was formed from a small band who walked a circular route
from Kirkbymoorside at the town literary festival arranged by the Summit Bookshop
in July 2007, and included in the May of that year 'The Moorsider'. The walk, with views
across the poet's childhood places, included readings from Herbert Read's 'The Innocent Eye' and
from other local poets of historical or literary interest. The route can be traced by anyone who is a
fit walker and follows the 'Kirkbymoorside and Kirkdale Walk Leaflet Number 17' of the North Yorkshire
County Council (on NYCC website and at local information points-Summit Bookshop,Libraries, Information Centres). No text can
be supplied from Read's book or poems because of copyright restrictions.
Current work of the Group includes continuing
the work of the late Doctor Isabel McLean on her projected 'Herbert Read of Ryedale'. Contact details of the Group will soon be found on the Alliance of Literary Societies website,
or are available at Summit Bookshop.
The photographs
are of two of Read's special places, which are accessible, but which both need sensitivity and careful approaches
by visitors using local narrow roads or footpaths.
